Launch of Maersk's Newbuild Green Methanol Container Ship

news-details

Floating milestone for Maersk's newbuild vessel as the compamy launches World’s First Green Methanol Container Ship last week.

“The launching was successfully completed at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard and the construction is continuing.” Henrik Ekmann Head of Newbuilding & Retrofit at Maersk explains.

The 2100 TEU capacity feeder vessel is 172 meters long and will sail in the network of Sealand Europe, a Maersk subsidiary, on the Baltic shipping route between Northern Europe and the Bay of Bothnia.

The feeder vessel has a dual-fuel engine and will be able to operate on green methanol, taking Maersk’s commitment to lead the way towards a sustainable shipping industry.

Maersk has set ambitious sustainability goals, aiming to become carbon neutral by 2040, which is a decade ahead of most other companies in the sector. The company has also set nearer-term targets that call for a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions intensity from its ocean fleet and a 70% reduction in absolute emissions from its fully controlled terminals by 2030.
